You were so emotional on court. How do you feel now?

I do not know what is left inside me, I do not even fully realize what happened. It was a very important moment, I always dreamed of winning the Kremlin Cup at the «Olimpiyskiy» Stadium. And that happened, I managed to jump on the bandwagon at the 11th hour. I'm so happy!

At the very end of the match, you were leading 5/3, the score in the game was 40:30, it's your serve, a rally follows, the linesman says your ball was out, that was a close call on match-point. Why didn’t you take a challenge? You had two left.

I got so tight. I did not understand what I was doing. I wasn’t able to think, serve, play. This is the moment when your brain shuts down. Athletes will understand me.

There was the impression that you really wanted to win, but your trademark tennis didn't work at all. Later you began to play in defense, you were serving at a speed of 110-120 km/h not to allow your opponent to use the power of your shots against you. And this tactics worked. You were sticking to it till the end. Was it really like that? And was it difficult to deal with your opponent and keep using this tactic till the end without being tempted to start hitting hard?

This is all true. I really wanted to win, it leads to such moments when you want so much, but you cannot. You start to get nervous, expect something from yourself. But in the end, my magic coach came on court (laughter) and helped me again. Just gave me some basic tactics that I can always use, I just needed to be reminded of it. I started to play in defense, did not invent anything special, I was just trying to play a solid game, using mostly my backhand.

Do you agree with Shamil Tarpishchev that such victories are more important than those when everything goes well and you dominate?

Maybe, yes, I agree. For you will remember such wins. You understand that you really surpassed yourself, you did not give up and continued to play.

You have a flight to Singapore in three hours, with what thoughts do you fly to the WTA Finals and what do you expect? You are an alternate player thanks to today's victory.

I have zero thoughts (laughter) I don’t know what to expect yet. It seems to me that they will carry me to the plane to Singapore and say: “Fly!”. On the connecting flight they will say: “Sit down here, fly there!”. We'll see how it goes. I plan to do nothing for two days. And then we'll see how they will play, maybe someone will pull out.

Remember that match at the Olympics against Ons [Jabeur]? Can you compare how it was then and now?

I don't remember that match very well. I remember that I won the tie-breaker of the second set. I know that was pretty much the same situation (as today), very strange and dangerous. But Ons [Jabeur] is great. She has come a long way to this finals. Everyone saw that she gave it all, she had cramps. I’m sure it hurts to lose in the final. It's just that kind of feeling - when you realize that you gave it 120% and still lost, but at least you did your utmost to win.
