Karen Khachanov: «I want to win the title match»

Today you got off to a good start. How did you manage it? What happened in the second set and how is it that you ended up winning?

I’e ve been having a quick start all the time in recent matches. I start very actively, aggressively. My opponents do not expect this. In the second set Daniil managed to start a fight thanks to his good serve. After all, he is a powerful server just like me. I had a couple of break-points, but it was not possible to convert them as Daniil played these couple of rallies well. So it came to a tie-break, where he played very confidently, without making easy errors. And in the third set one break was enough for me to win the match.

How do you evaluate the physical load you’ve had in this match? Will you have enough energy left for tomorrow?

Of course, this is not a match of five sets, but a standard one. I play five-setters for 3-4 hours. Therefore, today I rather have some mental fatigue, because I played in Moscow against a compatriot in front of my home crowd – I got very tired after this. But the atmosphere was incredible.

Many were cheering up for you, someone supported Daniil. How do you feel about the fact that the stands were divided?

The fact that the fans cheered for us was to be expected. Some of them are more sympathetic to me, someone to Daniil. I take it easy.

You have been competing with Daniil since you were 12-year old, do you know your H2H including the matches you played before the beginning of your professional career?

I don’t have such stats since our childhood, I only know what our approximate H2H has been 5-4 or 5-3 in my favor taking into account this match.

What do you expect from your match against Adrian Mannarino? What to expect from the final tomorrow?

Of course, I want to win the title match. I should be prepared psychologically.

What do you think about the opponent?

He is an experienced player who had a slump in the ranking, but he is in the Top25. He is a very "sticky" and troublesome lefty. The first lefthander for me to play in this tournament. It will be necessary to prepare well tactically, to work out situations that may happen in the match. Playing against lefties is always special. I hope everything will work out.

What tournaments will close your season?

I plan to play Vienna and Paris.

How do you feel about Daniil's mischievous behavior on court? Do you think this is his signature style or should he stop it?

He has already become much better comparing with the period when we played children's tournaments. Daniil has become calmer, so his ranking is growing. If he did not change and overreacted on each rally, he would not be standing where he is now. Sometimes this behavior actually helps him: he starts to show his displeasure, but at the same time Daniil continues to play. So his behavior can both positively and negatively affect his game.
